IA :  How do you manage to keep your work as fun as possible despite its very technical aspects ?

ML : Simple! I keep my eyes on the end product. When times are hard, I make sure to remind myself how awesome the end result will be.

IA :  What was the most difficult challenge to overcome on Ryse Son of Rome? why ?

ML : Finishing the game on time for the launch of the new console; Xbox One without sacrificing quality. We were working on a very tight schedule and we had no choice to deliver on a certain date.

IA :  Games are becoming more and more realistic in terms of animation, rendering, etc … What’s your vision regarding the future of gaming ?

ML : The sky’s the limit! Soon we will be playing games that look so realistic, that it will be more like playing a movie. This will bring the experience to higher level. The experience will be so convincing!

IA :  We recently met at THU in Portugal and sounds like you had a lot of pleasure sharing with the audience your experience and work. What’s the benefits of such workshops for you?

ML: I always take time to do seminars. I love sharing my passion with the new generation. I have been working in the gaming and movie industry for 23 years and, I feel as though the industry gave me so much throughout my career, it is only normal for me to give back now. I also love teaching, I always make time to help upcoming artists.

IA:  What would be your first advice to someone who would like to start a carrier in the CG industry ?

ML: Work hard! It is a competitive world out there and companies only want to hire the best CG Artists. To become an excellent artist, you need to work long hours for many years, be passionate, creative and believe in yourself!

IA :  In your opinion, how can you qualify your work as art ?

ML : Animation for Video Games or Movies is a form of art, “Commercial Art” to be exact. My Art has to please an audience, right? So in other words, I have to deliver what I think people want to see. No matter how creative I am during production, I never forget that I am working for a public. They have expectations and I have to meet them!

IA :  What’s your own definition of art ?

ML : To me, Art is the creative expression of a human with the goal of evoking an emotion. As an Artist, I always want to see people react to my work. I keep that in mind during any production I work on. I want people to remember what I do and what I have done. For that, I have to put my heart and soul into all of my work.
